What is the Nova Scotia Memorial Marker Database?

This site strives to be a complete record of every grave marker in Nova Scotia. The project would be finished when every marker was on file, complete with a good quality picture and transcription. In addition, the site contains interesting facts about graveyards, gravestones and the individuals commemorated on them.

What can I do with the site?

The main draw of the site is to search for specific people and see their gravestone. The search engine allows you to perform a wide variety of searches, from the very specific search for a certain name to a broad search - say, everyone who died before their tenth birthday, or lived to be 100 years old.

You can also browse the cemeteries, view special collections (examples include Halifax Explosion victims, those lost at sea, and unusual inscriptions), and add your own notes on individuals. I strongly encourage you to upload pictures of graveyards in your area!

Who runs this?

My name is Allen White, and I created the site and 95% the content on it. I love to hear from you - email me at using allen at allenwhite.net with your questions, suggestions and submissions! I REALLY love getting pictures from graveyards far from my home in Halifax. Putting the word NSMMD in the subject line ensures your mail gets through my spam defences.

What are the terms of use?

All graveyard transcriptions and pictures on this site are free for personal use. I am happy to provide the high resolution originals of any pictures that I took, and I can provide graveyard data in many prepared formats for use in your own projects. Other content may be restricted - this would only apply to things that I did not create myself. No guarantees are implied as to the accuracy of the information presented. There will never be any fee to use this site.
